President Criticizes UNSC’s:
The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, spoke at a press conference in Delhi on January 24, calling for a revamp of the United Nations Security Council. He pointed out that the council, established in the aftermath of World War II, doesn’t align with the current world order. Francis emphasized that the council, due to geopolitical factors, has struggled to make crucial decisions for maintaining global peace and security.
He highlighted the need for democratizing the council and stressed that its structure should better reflect today’s geopolitical realities. According to Francis, the council’s recent inability to take necessary actions is often influenced by global power dynamics, leading to the use of vetoes. He concluded by stating that reforming the council is essential to address these challenges.

The UNSC stands for the United Nations Security Council. It is one of the principal organs of the United Nations and is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The UNSC has the authority to impose sanctions, authorize the use of force, establish peacekeeping missions, and issue resolutions binding on UN member states. It consists of 15 member countries, including five permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten elected members serving two-year terms. The UNSC addresses a wide range of global issues, including conflicts, threats to peace, and acts of aggression.
