Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed criticized the language used, highlighting India’s importance as a key ally. The anti-India comments have sparked calls for a boycott by Indian celebrities and influencers. Tensions between India and Maldives have risen due to the country’s pro-China shift.

Zahid Rameez, a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives, seems upset about the attention Lakshadweep received after Prime Minister Modi’s post. Rameez mocked Modi’s visit, claiming that India can’t compete with Maldives in tourism. Despite facing criticism on social media, Rameez has refused to apologize.

Additionally, Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna used offensive language against PM Modi but later deleted her post.

In response to the public outcry, the Maldives government took action by suspending three ministers, including Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan, who were involved in making inappropriate remarks. Facing pressure to address the situation and reassure India, the government, led by Mohamed Muizzu, who has pro-China leanings, distanced itself from the offensive comments made by Shiuna and other leaders. The government clarified that these opinions are personal and don’t reflect the official views of the Maldives government.
