Iran and Pakistan’s Border Strains Striking Each Other Territories 2024

border

Iran and Pakistan’s Border Strains:

Pakistan and Iran recently launched attacks on each other’s territories, marking a significant increase in tensions between the neighboring nations. Their border, spanning around 900 kilometers, is a hotspot, with Pakistan’s Balochistan province on one side and Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province on the other.

Despite both countries facing challenges from militants in the Baloch region, it’s uncommon for them to target these militants within each other’s borders. This unexpected escalation comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Middle East and beyond.

What Happened Between Iran and Pakistan’s Border:

Things started getting intense on Tuesday when Iran carried out attacks in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Unfortunately, the strikes resulted in the tragic death of two children and left several others injured, as reported by Pakistani authorities.

Iran argued that its target was solely Iranian terrorists within Pakistan and insisted that no Pakistani citizens were harmed. However, this move angered Pakistan, which condemned the attack as a clear violation of international law and the friendly relationship between the two countries.

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the strikes were aimed at the strongholds of Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group also known as Jaish al-Dhulm or the Army of Justice in Iran. This separatist group operates on both sides of the Iran-Pakistan border and has a history of claiming responsibility for attacks against Iranian targets. Their ultimate objective is to achieve independence for Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province.

Pakistan, armed with nuclear capabilities, is mostly Sunni, the leading branch of Islam. On the other hand, Iran and its “axis of resistance” primarily follow Shia Islam.

Tension Increases Between Iran and Pakistan:

After Iran fired missiles into Pakistan’s Balochistan province, Pakistan responded by targeting separatist groups in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province the next day. This region, where Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet, has seen resentment from the local Baloch people who feel under the rule of both Islamabad and Tehran. Insurgencies have been ongoing in this border area for decades.

In retaliation, Pakistan carried out what they called “highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes” on alleged separatist hideouts in Sistan and Baluchestan two days later. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry announced the strikes, claiming that they resulted in the death of several militants. However, at least 10 individuals, all Pakistani nationals, were reported dead. Iranian authorities are investigating how these individuals came to settle in the affected village.

Pakistan argued that it had long complained about separatist fighters finding safe havens in Iran, prompting them to take action with the strikes on Thursday.

border

Diplomatic Drama Between Iran and Pakistan:

Iran’s Tuesday strikes led to tensions, prompting Pakistan to recall its ambassador and halt high-level visits. Pakistan’s Thursday strikes led Iran to demand an explanation, conducting a large-scale military exercise. Turkey, India, China, and the EU expressed concern, with the US urging restraint. The State Department clarified the situation wasn’t linked to Gaza but emphasized the risk of regional conflict escalation. Both nations, considering separatist groups a common enemy, hinted at avoiding full-blown hostilities. Pakistan called Iran a “brotherly country,” emphasizing joint solutions, while Iran referred to Pakistan as a “friendly country,” asserting proportionate strikes against militants.

What India Said On this Matter:

Source – India Today

  • India’s Ministry of External Affairs notes that India recognizes actions taken in self-defense. Iran’s strikes within Pakistan occurred shortly after India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, visited Tehran.

Narendra Modi’s Lakshadweep Visit Gains Eyes of World 2024

narendra modi

About Lakshadweep Visit:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently shared moments from his Lakshadweep trip, marveling at its beauty. This visit was part of his South India tour before the 2024 elections. He inaugurated projects worth Rs 1,150 crore, focusing on Lakshadweep’s potential as a tourist spot.

Home Minister Amit Shah endorsed this, highlighting the region’s charm. Both leaders emphasized the boost in tourism and economic growth, aiming to enhance residents’ lives.

Geopolitical Advantage:

Prime Minister Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination may be a response to the Maldives, a popular beach spot for Indians. The Maldives has raised concerns about its ties with China, even requesting India’s military withdrawal. This move aligns with China’s growing influence in the Maldives, leasing islands and conducting military activities. Focusing on Lakshadweep could give India a strategic advantage in monitoring China’s actions in the Maldives, countering potential setbacks.

BJP Targets Muslim Voters:

In his Lakshadweep speech, PM Modi connected with the Muslim-majority population, highlighting BJP’s steps for Haj Yatris, improving processes, and allowing women to go on Haj without ‘Mehram.’ Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, this outreach not only targets Muslim voters in Lakshadweep but also in Kerala, as the two regions share close ties. PM Modi’s gesture appears to appeal to Muslim voters from both areas before the upcoming elections.

Narendra Modi’s Lakshadweep Visit Sparks Row:

People are urging a boycott of Maldives tourism after Maldivian politicians made disrespectful comments about PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit. The Maldives government distanced itself from the remarks, emphasizing responsible expression. Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed criticized the language used, highlighting India’s importance as a key ally. The anti-India comments have sparked calls for a boycott by Indian celebrities and influencers. Tensions between India and Maldives have risen due to the country’s pro-China shift.

Zahid Rameez, a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives, seems upset about the attention Lakshadweep received after Prime Minister Modi’s post. Rameez mocked Modi’s visit, claiming that India can’t compete with Maldives in tourism. Despite facing criticism on social media, Rameez has refused to apologize.

Additionally, Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna used offensive language against PM Modi but later deleted her post.

Maldives Government Suspends Three Minister’s:

In response to the public outcry, the Maldives government took action by suspending three ministers, including Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan, who were involved in making inappropriate remarks. Facing pressure to address the situation and reassure India, the government, led by Mohamed Muizzu, who has pro-China leanings, distanced itself from the offensive comments made by Shiuna and other leaders. The government clarified that these opinions are personal and don’t reflect the official views of the Maldives government.

In a statement, the government emphasized the importance of expressing opinions in a democratic and responsible manner without spreading hatred or negativity, especially when it comes to international relationships. The government also asserted its commitment to taking action against individuals who make derogatory remarks, making it clear that such behavior will not be tolerated.
