Geopolitical Advantage:

Prime Minister Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination may be a response to the Maldives, a popular beach spot for Indians. The Maldives has raised concerns about its ties with China, even requesting India’s military withdrawal. This move aligns with China’s growing influence in the Maldives, leasing islands and conducting military activities. Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed criticized the language used, highlighting India’s importance as a key ally. The anti-India comments have sparked calls for a boycott by Indian celebrities and influencers. Tensions between India and Maldives have risen due to the country’s pro-China shift.

Zahid Rameez, a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives, seems upset about the attention Lakshadweep received after Prime Minister Modi’s post. Rameez mocked Modi’s visit, claiming that India can’t compete with Maldives in tourism. Despite facing criticism on social media, Rameez has refused to apologize.

Additionally, Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna used offensive language against PM Modi but later deleted her post.

Maldives Government Suspends Three Minister’s:

In response to the public outcry, the Maldives government took action by suspending three ministers, including Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan, who were involved in making inappropriate remarks. Facing pressure to address the situation and reassure India, the government, led by Mohamed Muizzu, who has pro-China leanings, distanced itself from the offensive comments made by Shiuna and other leaders. The government clarified that these opinions are personal and don’t reflect the official views of the Maldives government.

In a statement, the government emphasized the importance of expressing opinions in a democratic and responsible manner without spreading hatred or negativity, especially when it comes to international relationships. The government also asserted its commitment to taking action against individuals who make derogatory remarks, making it clear that such behavior will not be tolerated.

Because of the negative comments about India made by some well-known people from the Maldives on Twitter, various Indian celebrities and social media influencers are urging people to avoid visiting the Maldives and its tourist spots. Actors like Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar, cricketer Aakash Chopra, and others are encouraging Indians to cancel their plans to visit the Maldives and consider domestic destinations instead. On the flip side, actors like Salman Khan, John Abraham, Shraddha Kapoor, and others are praising the beauty of Lakshadweep.
