Google to restrict third-party cookies in Chrome today 2024

Google to Disable Cookies:

When it comes to safeguarding your online privacy, our work in Chrome is ongoing. We’re introducing Tracking Protection on January 4, a feature that limits cross-site tracking by default, restricting access to third-party cookies.

This is part of our Privacy Sandbox initiative, aiming to eliminate third-party cookies for all users by the second half of 2024, pending resolution of any competition concerns from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority.

Role of Third-Party Cookies:

For nearly 30 years, third-party cookies have played a crucial role on the web. While they can be used to track your online activities, websites also use them for various purposes, like helping you log in or showing relevant ads.

With the Privacy Sandbox, we’re responsibly phasing out third-party cookies in Chrome. We’ve developed new tools for sites to support essential functions and given developers time to adapt. Introducing Tracking Protection to a small percentage of Chrome users allows developers to test their preparedness for a web without third-party cookies.

Expectation From Tracking Protection:

If you’re chosen as one of the participants for Tracking Protection, you’ll receive a notification when you open Chrome on your desktop or Android. While browsing, third-party cookies will be limited by default, reducing tracking across websites.

If a website doesn’t function properly without third-party cookies and Chrome detects issues (like multiple page refreshes), you’ll be prompted to temporarily re-enable third-party cookies for that site from the eye icon on your address bar.
